Leonardo - Photo Layer Editor

GREAT! Alternative to Photoshop!

I’ve been searching for a replacement to Photoshop Mix for weeks. This app is great. Definitely worth it for what I do. I needed a “simple” app to layer photos - so I can overlay them on each other and also cut out. This app is very intuitive, not overloaded with extra features, does what it says it does. I would pay double for it. Please keep this app functional, it is a HUGE relief. I did not want to support Ad0be because they discontinued their app support and forced users into a paid subscription, overloading the app with AI and other unnecessary features. I have been a loyal Photoshop user for 20 years but I will not support them any more. This app does not disappoint. It has convenient features at the touch a finger. Thank you so much.

Should be Included with every iPad!

Update: one of my favorite image editing apps BUT it is filled with bugs and features that don’t work the way they’re supposed to. Sometimes I have to take a screenshot of my completed image because when I save the image correctly, it doesn’t look anything like it does while editing! ——————————— Older review: I'm giving a new review since Leonardo is now os10 savvy and I recently got a iPad mini 4. I mention the two items together because the mini 4 has replaced much older iPads I had and it has a far better camera than the older iPads... but though the camera is quite good, it's still far from perfect. This is where Leonardo comes in. It is the perfect complimentary app to quickly and drastically improve the iPad's photos. It works so perfectly/easily tweaking the iPad images that it could be considered the defacto photo app for this device. The quick results are so impressive that I am getting far better looking images than phones which include superior cameras. If it only had a batch setting, this would be beyond ideal! ------------- Original write up... 'Near Perfect Image App' Though it lacks a few features which I have to revert to another app to utilize, Leonardo has such a huge assortment of professional image editing options, it has become the final defacto app for completing image edits. Puts Adobe's iPad arsenal to shame.

Too fantastic to be free

If you know Photoshop, you can do anything with this. That it's mobile is beyond amazing. I'm glad it's free, but can't figure why it is. It's that good. I use it every day on an iPad, and it's why I no longer bother with my desktop or laptop. The more you know, the more you'll get out of it. It's got layers, pro tools, effects, filters, press tools, and an astoundingly small footprint. My biggest fear is that a big competitor will buy and bury it like they've done with so many innovative apps they couldn't beat. PS I *think* it’s the best app for photo editing, but I never looked at any others after I found it.

I STILL LOVE IT !!! 😍

This app is still super awesome and more advanced than much newer editing apps. It was way ahead of its time as far as removing backgrounds and adding layer effects etc. I do have Superimpose X. I love it too. But this is still my comfort zone go-to. I find myself in this app more than anything else I have on my 12.9 iPad Pro including Affinity products. I hope the Superimpose team continues to produce their high quality line of software. They really do make my iPad a Pro device. I also have the incredible Superimpose V, which is currently blowing away any video editor. I wish they had more representation in the art world on YouTube etc. They are being sorely overlooked. I can’t live without them lol. Thank you to the devs for such awesome software. Definite staples on my iPad.

Turn off stock photos, Not Wanted

Pinned to top of photo library access. Much too easy to click on. I would like to opt out of this.

I guess the free version resolution is still crippled beyond usefulness

Used to be great but with only one resolution available, “small”, since an update a few years ago, everything imports horribly low res. I’m assuming this is just on the free version to get users to upgrade. But it renders it completely useless. Plus, as mentioned, merge down function has been broken for ages. Merging layers from layer opacity adjustment menu deletes bottom layer. You can leave that and flatten, which works, but if you don’t want to flatten all layers you’re out of luck. Dev never responded to email. Oh well. In the trash.

good program

good editor

How do I fix this?

Hi. This is a great app that I used to use for some photo editing. I just downloaded it on my new phone and I was excited to use it but for some reason every time I add an image, it’s quality becomes very poor. It didn’t do this before. How do I fix it?

Cat

This is amazing app. I keep learning more every time I use it! Thanks!

Very good editor

I borderline on 5 or 4 stars because this is almost a perfect graphics editor. For the price, it is the best app I’ve found. I’ve used it to create multiple collages, put fire into my fireplace, create funny picture edits for my kids, and more. Tools available are so much like Photoshop and I can do it all from my iPad. Things that would make this a perfect score: ability to have more layers (it maxes out somewhere above 20 so who needs 20 separate layers, but I did last week in a massive collage. I tried to work around the layer issue with merge down but it is a quirky merge or I just don’t understand it. Also, the ability to move part of an image seems basic but I can’t figure out how to float the selection and move part of a layer elsewhere or better yet make a new layer out of the selection. A workaround I have is to duplicate the layer and crop it to the piece that I want. Very extremely cool app! Thank you! I needed something with the power of GIMP but on an iPad and I’ve used this now for 2+ years and love it.

Best app

I’ve used this app for years for multiple sports accounts on Instagram and have had work reposted by NFL and NBA players and teams. This app is easily the best editing app on the App Store and way better than SuperImposeX, so I just wish they would focus on this app more. I used this app on an IPhone 6s for almost 3 years and had no problems, but when I updated to an IPhone XS the screen gets all blurry when you’re using the app. This app is amazing so I just wish they would fix this! They haven’t updated it in over a year so maybe it just doesn’t work with this type of phone, but I really wish they would fix this bug so I could get back to using it the way I used to. But definitely worth the money!

Please help!!

I’ve been using this app for years. But now, whenever I export a photo it completely makes the photo blurry! Nothing is fixing it. I deleted the app and reinstalled and yet it’s the same thing. I have the I phone XS. This shouldn’t be happening...please fix

Bad exports

When ever I export a photo with cloning it usually glitches the photo and ruins all the cloning, the only way around this is taking a screenshot of it before exporting it but then it makes the quality so so bad very pixelated

I don't need Photoshop on my PC anymore!

Need update for importing the PSD files. It crash in import Yep this app is so great that I don't use photoshop unless I need 16MP or above multi layers photo edit. It is great for intensive edited 8MP photos. I knocked 1 star because some tool have bug and operability issues that can be improved. The user interface is great for the mobile screens even for the SE, love the brush remain the same screen size when you zoom in or out. Keep up the good work!

Great app but needs help with exporting pictures

The app is great but when you export a photo to your phone the quality is greatly reduced and most times now my pictures saved look nothing like they do on the apps my guess is some compression technique is going wrong or the resolution output to the phone is off. Please fix.

Great but Devs Gave Up

This is one of the best photo editors but the devs gave up on it in order to promote their app “SuperimposeX.”

Help

My quality is so bad when I use this app I use to love it it shouldn’t be bad I have the I phone x please help please

Missing projects after iPhone XI Pro restore

Oct 2019: the projects started in iPhone X did not transfer to new phone! No way to share PSD with laters & masks from device to device. May 2018 review: On iPhone X (&later) the Camera Fill shutter button is covered by other tools. App needs to fix screen layout. Missing help on how to select colors from any image (eye dropper tool). Confusing to apply effect with checkmark but other places user double taps screen. Really? Earlier Review: Leonardo is a big app packed with features and effects. Enjoying learning to use Layers, Selections & Masks. Glad it got Aug 2018 update that fixed PSD export to Dropbox.

Leonardo

I like this app it’s very useful. I took away a star. Because they automatically have GEODATA checked. I didn’t notice at first, but always uncheck it. Developer, please remove this altogether. It’s totally giving out personal location and other information.

Strong promising app, but missing important things

2019-06-26 I thought that I had reviewed this app before, but none the less, here is my review after using the app for a while. I had praised this app in other reviews, but I might need to correct those reviews. Initially, I thought this app was great, & for some things, it is. Problems: No erase tool erase and mask is not the same. Masking, in this app, can cause you problems, so, erase tool would solve some of those problems. Selection - whether to mask or for other reason, selecting with a low tolerance should be able to protect colors that are not similar to the one I am currently on. So if I start on white, I shouldn’t be able to select black if I’m at 1 tolerance. This app does. Merge down is broken. When you choose “Merge down” it should merge the two layers into one. It doesn’t. It gets rid of the top layer. I’ve run into several broken features, but these are the ones that I tried to use today. Also, they should have a substitute color feature. The hue changes everything on the layer. If I want to change yellow to red on a layer that has multiple colors, it would be nice to be able to do that. If the selection feature worked better, I could select the color and copy it to a layer above and then use the hue filter but... well, I guess it just doesn’t work that well. Hopefully, these things can be addressed. This could be one of the best apps in its class. Right now, it’s a 3 teetering on the edge of 2. I’ll come back and update if I find that these issues are fixed.

Needs a serious update

This app is great, but needs a serious update. It looks like it was made in 1995 or something. It has many features and it can be incredibly powerful, but it lacks a lot. It just needs to be brought up and polished. Big time.

Bugs and Updates

Overall the app use it all the time, but there are a few things I would change. Like, when I get to certain amount of layers, I can’t add anymore. Then I can’t finish what I’m working on without a lot more work. One other issue is the layer merge. It was fine not too ago, now, when I try to merge two items, one just disappears! I really like this app, but these are two things I would really like to see changed. Another issue I have found is that inside the app, the project is super low quality, it is fine when I save it to my phone, but I can hardly see to work on it!

Put your clients first!

I haven’t used the app yet. But as soon as I opened the app, I get prompted to upgrade to a better version of the app. Another $5! GIVE THAT OPTION BEFORE I PURCHASE THE WATERED DOWN VERSION FOR $5!!!

No longer updated

I’d used and loved this app for years, but there appears to be no support for more recent iOS devices (and it hasn’t been updated in many months). More to the point, the iPhone XS can only import/export photos at the app’s lowest possible resolution, which means that it no longer serves any practical purpose for me.

Epic

If you devs see this please please release a android version

Great, but needs improvement

- No discernable support contact - "Merge down" function is broken, deletes bottom image + Comparable to a desktop photo editor, unlike many other iOS "photo editor" apps that can only apply filters - Working/edit preview is in low res, but final image maintains full quality, so it is difficult to do anything but simple edits - [REMOVED IMPORTANT FEATURE] The eye dropper tool is missing! How can I pick colours from the current image on screen now?

Questions

Hi. Love the app but have lost work in progress during upgrades. Is there any plan to store files through upgrades? Like Procreate does? Also any way to sync projects between iPhone and iPad versions? Thanks

Crashes too much

Lately, I’ve been having problems with this app and crashing. I would start a project and leave it unfinished for another time. Later on, when I come back to finish, on the home screen, it shows half of the project thumbnail with the other half being completely transparent. When I try opening the project, it immediately crashes. This needs to be fixed.

Quality

Ever since you released superimpose x it feels like the quality of Leonardo got terrible

Pls fix it

I am have issues with merging pictures together and the pic below always disappears

Photos import blurry now

Sadly, support for this app seems to have dropped off. Pictures are imported low res and blurry on iPhone 8 Plus, and others have reported the same with iPhone X, which essentially makes it completely useless. Super disappointing, as this used to be a stellar experience.

Removed eye dropper? Losing support!?

I enjoy this app but it seems to be getting limited with time? Trying to push the new app by the developer? Superimpose X

Leonardo is broken

Developer is not telling us whether he will/can update the app. Meanwhile users are treated to a “layered” promotion for a different app.

Used to be great.

Then the update forked it. No more color selection tool.

Use it every day

I use it for my drawings to add colors etc. Masking and making selection is the best I have seen. Enough effects. Easy to use etc! Adult coloring using this is fun! I get to color my own drawings! My go to app for pretty much everything for post production! Please update this with full resolution output! There is no other apps that do the selection and masking as well as this!

Please add this tool back

There was a tool that you could use when making a gradient or a blank layer that you could move it to a color on the picture you have set it was very useful and I would enjoy having it back

Update pls?

This app is so comfortable to use. I’ve been using this app for about 4-5 years and I love it but all my photos are blurry on the iPhone X, so it’s hard to work with. I’ve grew so much with this app and I hope to still use it! Just that small fix would be amazing!!!!

Excellent all-purpose photo editing app!

Leonardo does everything! Crop, editing tools, masking, filters, color, overlays, mirror and reflect, effects, and much, much more—all contained within a simple, easy-to understand user interface. Thanks for the recent update! Highly recommend Leonardo!

@_spaceer_ on insta

So I got this app for making edits and I honestly can’t think of anything terrible about the app it’s worked fine and has made my edits look a lot better if you make edits on picsart then please switch to Leo or superimpose x it will make your edits look great and it’s well worth the money

My most used app!

I have been using Leonardo for 3 or so years; It's the closest thing to Photoshop I have found; I recommend completely. However, this app either needs to connect the app sandbox to iCloud, or give us a way to Airport them out. I strongly dislike how your sandbox works, where our projects are held to work on. Sure, I can backup to iTunes, but only in a format which cannot be edited inside Leonardo. I had to reinstall iOS, and I lost some images I was working on because I forgot to upload to iTunes. My fault, but it surely would like to have an easier way to save. I suspect I know why you don’t, and it’s probably a lot of work, but I’d pay more for an app with a better way to save photos. NONETHELESS, this is a fantastic app!

Nice but old, needs update

The app works nice, but Dropbox integration doesn’t work, Dropbox updated a few months ago and this application did not.

Buggy does not work with Dropbox

Program will not work with Dropbox says outdated Dropbox interface, program still good.

Best PS like app, and I tried them all

Amazing app better than any other photo editing app very responsive . Extensive amount of tools at your disposal. Extremely smooth 👍👍👍👍👍 Excellent export format option

It used to be great

Great photo editing app but since I updated to the latest OS and got an iPhone X, I can’t select the quality to be higher than small which makes it useless for my application. I sent a message to customer support a couple months ago and never heard back. Please update the app!!

Used to be my go to app for photo editing, but sadly no more

Update January 2017 I regret to say I never use this anymore since I store photos shot with my bridge and DSLR cameras in cloud storage and as noted in my previous review below Leonardo still lacks the ability to either open an image directly from a cloud location or open in Leonardo and retain EXIF data and file names. Though it can export PSD projects, it lacks the ability to import PSD projects. These factors started me moving away from Leonardo toward other apps that allow for multi-layer editing and masking such as Pixelmator (and now Affinity Photo) and masking apps that allow for saving transparent png files such as Union in the Pixite suite of apps. For my file management workflow and my spontaneous experimentational approach to editing and creating abstracts, I simply find other options more appealing. At this point I don't bother with Leonardo just in order to add an effect because I then have to copy a downsized layer created by Leonardo and paste it into a project I've created in Pixelmator which retains the original image size, file name and EXIF data as I desire (and allows saving that image to a cloud location), though of course that is still possible. Once I started moving away from Leonardo exploring other effects apps became more enticing and I find it doesn't occur to me to use it for the features I used to rely upon it for in the past. Earlier review: Still my go to app for editing because it's so versatile with so many features. Great for masking and layering. Just wish I could export to locations other than just Dropbox and that I could "open in" from apps at full res and with EXIF data intact. Snapseed retains EXIF data via open in from photos on Dropbox photos and I can confirm EXIF data exists on photo using Big Photo, so it's possible, but not done in Leonardo. I hope this gets changed in future updates. I'm running iOS 8.4 on iPhone 5S and iPad Air and this aspect has never worked right for me. I'd also like EXIF data retained from copied and pasted photos. Would so be great if there were iCloud Drive integration so I could open photos that are on my OneDrive. Pixelmator allows this, but I much prefer editing in Leonardo.

Please Update!

In desperate need of an update. I used this all the time (masking, many layers, amazing effects) to great satisfaction. Now on my X, pictures import with low resolution and super blurry. Please fix it because I love this app! Thank you.

Stay Away til Update

This used to be my go to photo editing app. It seems there’s been no update in over a year and without doing so, this app is basically worthless. I bring in images to edit and the they are very blurry. It was fine on my old phone, but on my X it’s not even worth using it if it were a free trial. Don’t get suckered, wait for an update or stay away.

Update for iPhone 8 Plus

When ever I put a image in a project, it looks blurry I have a iPhone 8 Plus and this app needs to be updated

Merge layers is broken in recent iOS update.

Great app. Lots of other apps were impacted. Other Apps fixed their issues. Logging as a bug. I paid for this app and there is no support. Apps with no support that don’t function after an update should be pulled from the App Store. I want a refund.
